Aveni is an Edinburgh and London based, award winning technology start up with deep expertise in Natural Language Processing. We are deploying the latest research in conversational analytics to applications in the Financial Services and regulated industries. Our 'Human+' approach combines a unique pipeline of speech technology and natural language processing to transform client engagement across the service industry


We are looking for a NLP Intern to support our NLP Engineers to deliver prototypes, products and datasets for the Aveni Detect product and client projects. With support from the engineers, you’ll collaborate with full stack developers, NLP researchers, business analysts and Aveni’s users.

You will learn how to uncover real user needs through analysing data, talking to customers and Business Analysts and help the whole Aveni team to quickly develop NLP projects from nothing through to implementation. You’ll use Label Studio, Python, Notebooks to develop prototypes which you’ll test by creating test sets and doing human evaluation.

This internship will introduce you to the full breadth of responsibilities of an NLP Engineer. We will also support the development of specific interests including but not limited to Agile Programming, Full Stack development, AWS cloud computing, PyTorch, NLP project planning and execution. Projects will be aimed at improving existing products and scoping out new functionality and might cover topics such as
detecting vulnerabilities, improving the data pipeline, classifying emotion, summarisation, and topic segmentation.

This internship role could appeal to a variety of candidates. Perhaps you are mid-way through a degree in a related area and looking to complete a sandwich year that will strengthen your resume when you graduate. You may have studied Computer Science (or similar) online or you are undergoing a pivot in your career and want to gain experience putting design skills into practice alongside an experienced engineer. Rather than require specific education or backgrounds, we’re looking for evidence of the following:

Studying for a degree in Computer Science or other STEM

Experience building machine learning / deep learning algorithms

Proficient with data structures and algorithms

Knowledge and experience of core Python, data science libraries such as Numpy, Pandas and Scipy and machine learning frameworks Scikit-learn, Keras,

TensorFlow and/or PyTorch

Good communication skills

And, ideally:
Understanding of CI/CD & Devops principles.
Experience working with cloud environments, ideally AWS.
Experience working in an Agile environment.
