What is Deep Learning?

Deep Learning is a type of Machine Learning (ML) that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create neural networks that are modelled after the human brain. Algorithms are trained on large datasets to perform tasks such as image recognition, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and from this data it makes predictions.

Just like our brains, Deep Learning neural networks have multiple layers that enable the learning of complex patterns in data. The more layers, the “deeper” the learning. Each layer learns to detect different features in the data, such as text, images, or sound. By stacking many layers, deep learning models can learn complex patterns, which can aid in decision-making, advice and predictions.

Deep Learning in financial services

Deep learning underpins many of the language technologies used in financial services, including speech-to-text transcription and models that classify what was said in a client conversation. Because these models can be hard to interpret, regulated firms pair them with testing, monitoring and explainable outputs for reviewers.
