Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that develops computers and machines to take on tasks that would traditionally be performed by natural (human) intelligence. The method uses algorithms that can analyse, classify and predict data. This involves learning from new data, acting on this data and improving it over time. To explain it in the simplest terms, it’s like watching a human child develop and become smarter.
In order to apply AI, you need a lot of data. AI algorithms are trained using large datasets so they are able to identify patterns, make predictions and offer recommendations, like a human would but faster and more effective.
You may have not realised but we use AI everyday as we go about our lives – using facial recognition to unlock your phone, chat-bots on your favourite online store, asking Alexa to turn the volume up and taking Netflix’ recommendation of something you might like to watch.
