Our co-founder and chief scientist Dr Lexi Birch is leading a newly approved EuroLLM project, utilising the Barcelona Supercomputer. The project was awarded 1.7M hours to help train large language models (LLMs) suitable for Europe and its multilingual economy.Â
Dr Birch will combine her academic role at the University of Edinburgh and her science and development role at Aveni with the supercomputer’s processing power to help identify industry-specific (vertical) LLMs. The project will look at real life scenarios to help train models and bring tailored applications of AI (artificial intelligence) to the finance sector.
LLMs are at the forefront of enormous progress in natural language processing (NLP) and AI. But they are almost all limited to using English (as well as a few other, high-resource languages). EuroLLM’s goal is to open the doors of inclusivity by training LLMs with open data and reproducibility, covering speech and text in all European languages.
Aveni joins a consortium of seven universities and two further SMEs to deliver this project as part of the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking.
